MOUNT PLEASANT CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT HEALTHY LIVING
Children at Mount Pleasant Primary School have been learning about healthy living and hearing more about the dangers of the high sugar levels found in their favourite drinks.
Delivered to a whole school assembly, Years 5 and 6 teacher Mr McManus produced a selection of drinks, including everything from Monster to Juicy Water – all of which contained more than the recommended daily allowance of 19 grams of sugar.
Jo Blackham, head of school at Mount Pleasant Primary School, said: “It’s vital that children learn about the importance of healthy living at an early age. Too much sugar is one of the leading causes of childhood obesity, but a lot of people don’t know that there can be up to three times the recommended daily allowance in a single can or bottle of their favourite drink.
“Our pupils were shocked to see the amount of sugar each drink contained, especially when it came to seemingly healthier options like flavoured water.”
The school has now also put together a display showcasing the sugar found in a variety of popular drinks.
